Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, first Congressperson to officially describe her religion as “none,” is sworn in not on the Bible, but on the document she’s actually supposed to be protecting and upholding—the Constitution.
[Fun fact: James Madison remains the only president to take his oath of office on a book of laws, rather than the Bible.]

Love this.

Also, she is the first openly bisexual member of Congress!

She’s also dispelling stereotypes about Creatively-Spelled Americans!

This is so awesome.

I bet Boehner’s hand got all hot and tingly when he picked up that book.

So like, when are Michiganders going to protest that horrible abortion bill that Gov. Snyder signed?

giver-of-armbands:

You know, the one that requires clinics that perform abortions to be under surgical center building codes, or that outlaws telemedicine abortions, or that requires doctors to interview women about why they want an abortion under the guise of “stopping coercion”.

Do you remember that giant bill got signed? Do you know that clinics are either going to have to find millions to renovate their buildings or shut down, thus making it harder for women to find clinics that perform abortions? Do you know that telemedicine abortions, where a doctor is able to speak with the women over the phone or something like Skype and allow her to have a medically induced abortion, are now banned? And that this ban will especially impact rural women, women without cars, or any woman who needs an abortion and is unable to make it to a clinic? Do you know that women are now going to have to answer invasive questions about why they are getting an abortion in order to ‘prevent coercion’, which will in reality probably shame the women more?

Can we get a little loud about this? Because apparently we all forgot this happened…

Does anyone else see the irony in the elephant being the symbol of the Republican Party?
Elephants live in matriarchal groups where males are excluded except to breed.  They’re herbivores and are known to be highly empathetic to other elephants as well as their dead; if one elephant in the group is in trouble, all the other elephants will pitch in to help it out.  They also practice collective raising of the young, with young elephants being tended to by all members of the herd.
You guys, elephants are socialist vegan feminists who support public education.
It’s also worth mentioning that most elephants are bisexual.

It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white or hispanic or asian or native american or young or old or rich or poor, able, disabled, gay or straight, you can make it in America if you’re willing to try."

TAMMY BALDWIN, the Senator-Elect from Wisconsin, will become the first openly gay person ever elected to Senate. MAZIE HIRONO, the Senator-Elect from Hawaii, will become the first Asian-American woman in Senate. TAMMY DUCKWORTH, the Representative-Elect for Illinois, will become the first disabled female veteran elected to the House of Reps. (she lost both her legs in the Iraq War).

Tonight is one for the history books.

Would just like to point out that Tammy Duckworth will be the first disabled woman veteran (wounded in combat, no less) to enter Congress, and that is pretty fucking badass.

Oddly enough, no one seems to be talking about this.
